Sematura lunus
large,4.5", intricately patterned wings, short tails
primary rainforest
This was a tough spotting to get. I was surprised my guide even saw it. It was off the trail and on the under side of a leaf on a small shrub. I didn't want to disturb it and risk that it might fly away, so I lied down on the ground on my back and moved slowly until I was underneath it. As you can imagine, there wasn't much under light, so I had to use the flash for it to come out clearly. I only saw this once.
Thanks for the group effort ID and the nice comment Leuba. It was special to see this.
Uups... You already have done the work ;-)... I just tried to look for a Columbian record, that's why I was late... Good jobs, folks!
Sematuridae, Sematurus lunus, sometimes also called Sematura luna or Nothus lunus, male.
I think you are right about the Sematura luna ID, Nuwan. This is the male of the species. The one with the white band would be the female. :)
