Carpenter bee - Female

Description:

Carpenter bees are large bees distributed worldwide. Some 500 species of carpenter bees are in the 31 subgenera. Their common name is because nearly all species build their nests in burrows in dead wood, bamboo, or structural timbers. Measuring from 40 to 55 mm, they are the largest bee in Brazil.

Habitat:

They occur in tropical and subtropical habitats around the world, and occasionally in temperate areas.

I found this critter near the jungle of Atlantic Forest, at Parque São Vicente, in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, and I took these photos while it was flying over and landing on the flowers of jasmim-da-índia (Quisqualis indica).
