Gas Mask Fly

Description:

The Gas Mask Flies are part of the Family Micropezidae. Their odd mouthpart structure makes them look like they are wearing a gas mask. They are probably saprophytic and those elaborate mouthparts are for sponging up their food. This one has 3 dark bands on the wings and was about 1 cm in length.

Habitat:

Came to a black light. Finca Argovia, Ruta de Cafe, Soconusco area of southern Chiapas, Mexico. About 1 hour from Tapachula.
