Eastern Fence Lizard

Description:

Rough looking, keeled scales make this an easy ID in North Carolina where most of our lizards are skinks. The females of the species have a strong chevron pattern on their back. Males, like this one, are more uniformly brown or grey but have brilliant blue green patches on their throats and bellies during breeding season.

This guy was taking advantage of an unusually warm March day by basking on a rock wall.
