Wood Frog

Rana sylvatica

Description:

Female frog (large). At least 3 inches long with leg extended. - Brown, black, tan with black eyed mask. Laying eggs in water. Frog with "freeze tolerance". There are no other frogs in North America with this appearance. Adult food: Variety of invertebrates. Wood frog tadpoles will eat wood frog eggs.

Habitat:

Woodlands. Natural water source (spring) with built-up man-made dam. Frogs found water naturally.

Notes:

You can barely see it in the video. But she pushes the eggs out when she is straddling the stick. And then the motion of her legs and feet pushes the eggs a few inches. The last photo shows the eggs she pushed out. All photos (except egg mass) and video are x24 zoom.

I just found 8 more egg masses in the woodland pond. Lots of tadpoles in the near future.
