These are near an area that has many sweat (miner) bees in the spring

Nice spotting! It's an oil beetle (Meloe sp.)....and, this is a male (they have bent antennae). This is probably either Meloe impressus or Meloe americanus. Here's a link: https://bugguide.net/node/view/303
