Bateleur

Terathopius ecaudatus

Description:

Very long pointed wings that hang down below a very short chestnut tail when the bird is perched. First seen fling around the Buffalo Springs National reserve but this one, one on the ground, was seen in the Maasai Mara reserve. In flight, the white underwing is visible, so I have added this to the series. That one is a male as the black trailing edge on the wings is much wider than a female's.

Habitat:

Notes:

Its canting side-to-side motion in flight gave this bird its name, which is the French term for a tightrope walker who uses a balancing ploe
