Progne subis subis
This is the eastern subspecies of the purple martin, the largest North American swallow. Males (pictured right) are black with a metallic blue sheen. Females (pictured left) also have a blue sheen on their shoulders but are light brown.
Purple martins are distributed all over N. America, but I spotted these in coastal nesting boxes.
After I took these shots, I laughed at myself when I noticed that I accidentally focused on the fake birdie!
