Brown Pelican

Pelecanus occidentalis

Description:

This large shore bird is the smallest of the eight species of pelican.

Habitat:

Pelicans can be found in salt marshes and along the coastline of oceans and seas. It is sometimes seen farther out to sea.

Notes:

The brown pelican has an interesting way of fishing. It can be seen soaring above the water and then will plunge head first into the water to catch its prey.
