Cactus

Opuntia sp.

Description:

Segmented cactus with long spines (1 to 2 inches long).

Habitat:

Growing wild on a granite outcrop. This one was photographed at Heggies Rock near Appling (Columbia County), GA.

Notes:

On a field trip, this plant was identified as Opuntia drummondii. However, I can not find this species listed on the net. I wonder if it might be Opuntia humifusa (Eastern Prickly Pear).
