Hooded Owlet Moth

Cucullia sp.

Description:

A moth with the head of a Gorilla on it's thorax. Colored for camouflage and with many tufts of scales and hair. It has a very prominent pronotal tuft. About 2.5 cm long.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

Family Noctuidae, Subfamily Cucullinae, one of the many Hooded Owlet type moths, may be of the Genus Cucullia. This link from France shows many similar species of the Cucullinae and a larva or two (http://aramel.free.fr/INSECTES13-41-01.s...).

Thank you Jacob. I agree. I went through lots and lots of pictures of the Cucullinae and didn't find an exact match but supposedly there are hundreds of species just of Cucullia.
