Birch Polypore

Piptoporus betulinus

Description:

These puffy fungi were on several of these trees. The outside is papery and rough. I poked the top with a stick and found the inside was quite soft looking with some green and peach-colored flesh. You can see the underside of the "cap" in the last photo. It actually split the tree bark open where the fruiting body emerged

Habitat:

Birch tree near a lake

Interesting find, Machi. To me they look like decayed birch polypore specimens (Piptoporus betulinus).
