Fischer's lovebird

Agapornis fischeri

Description:

This brightly colored small parrot (family Psittaculidae), 15cm in length, is a species endemic to East Africa, mainly north-west of Tanzania and South-west of Kenya. It is bright green with a dull orange-red face and a yellow collar which extends round hindneck and across breast. Further, it has a broad white ring around dark eyes, and bright dark red bill - bill is typically parrot-like. Azure-blue rump - not visible in photos. Sexes are similar, it is difficult to see male from female based on appearance.

Habitat:

As said, this lovebird is an East-African endemics, and is found in wooded grasslands between 1000 and 2000 of altitude. Here, a flock was seen on shores of Elmenteita lake, close to Naivasha NP, in such habitat.

Notes:

I was really very lucky with this pair - saw a flock around, but these two stayed some time, just enough for my photo-session. This species can be easily confounded with Lilian's Lovebird, except that their ranges do not overlap. The name lovebird is coming from their regular mutual preening.
