Desert agave

Description:

A desert plant native to southern California. It has fleshy green-grey leaves that have sharp spines on the edges. The flower stalk can be as tall as 6 meters.

Habitat:

Spotted in the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.

Notes:

Native people ate the flowers and also roasted and ate the "heart" of rosettes that had just begun to send up a flower stalk.
