Anna's hummingbird (female)

Calypte anna

Description:

Females have an iridescent green back, dull green top of head with a small white patch behind the eye. The front is much lighter with light green, grey and white streaking. The throat has a small path of iridescent red but only shows up at the right angle.

Habitat:

Spotted in the backyard on a grapevine. Range is western North America - from southern Canada to northern Baja Calafornia. At the southern end of the range it extends east to southern Nevada and western Texas.

Notes:

This hummingbird consumes more insects than any of the other North American hummingbirds, catching small flying insects on the wing. Plucks spiders and trapped insects from spider webs. They also visit sapsucker holes and feed on sap and insects attracted to the holes.
