Giant Liana

Description:

One mighty big liana. The only other liana I've seen that could rival this specimen in size was a Giant Pepper Vine (Piper hederaceum or Piper novae-hollandiae), spotted at Tambourine Mountain in SEQ. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/251... A liana is simply a large vine. It isn't the name of the species, but rather, a description of the plant. The Wiki link provides some great information. There are literally dozens of species of liana in Australia, so an exact ID is most unlikely at this stage. A Giant Pepper Vine perhaps?

Habitat:

This spotting was at Ravensbourne National Park, at an elevation above 500 mtrs. Dense foliage and canopy, mostly native trees that I could see. Lots of leaf litter and quite damp due to recent rains or thick mist. Soft, filtered light.

Wow, Scott, that's a really impressive spotting of yours. The species name is so appropriate. My first impression was that it's straight out of Rivendell (Lord of the Rings, if you're into that sort of thing).
