Common Bushbrown

Description:

Nymphalidae; Satyrinae; Mycalesis perseus caesonia Wallengren, 1860 (wet season form). From the information given in Wikipedia (about Mycalesis perseus, not Mycalesis perseus caesonia), The way to differentiate between the male and the female is: "In the female the median or posterior ocellus on the upper side of the fore wing is always larger than in the male." This may or may not apply equally to the subspecies shown here, but it doesn't help since the upper side of the forewing cannot be seen in my pictures. I mention this only to clarify that I do not know which is the male and which is the female.

Habitat:

This copulating pair were spotted on fallen leaves at the bottom of a netting fence which surrounds our vegetable plot (to keep out free-range chickens which scratch up seeds and eat them).
