European Starling

Sturnus vulgaris

Description:

A Starling spotted in Stafford, England. Starlings are a medium-sized bird about 20 cm (8 in) long with a glossy black plumage with a metallic sheen, which is speckled with white at some times of year. The legs are pink and the bill is black in winter and yellow in summer; young birds have browner plumage than the adults. Starlings travel in flocks and often descend to forage on garden lawns. They are known for their aerial displays known as murmurations where anything from five to fifty thousand birds will swarm and form complex moving shapes in the sky.
