Asian Common Toad

Duttaphrynus melanostictus

Description:

Also known as the Black Spectacled Toad and various other local names. This is a medium sized species growing to about 20cm (8"). The dorsal side is a yellowish to brown with black spiny warts. The underside is pale and usually spotted. The head is ridged from the nose through to infront of, above and behind the eye and the crest of these ridges are black. The toes are semi webbed.

Habitat:

These toads are very widespread through out their range and have been recorded from sea-level up to 1,800m. Found in most habitats apart from closed forest, where they are not so common. They are terrestrial and live in low ground cover. This one seen in Nusa Dua in Bali where this species has been introduced from Java.

Notes:

It is most probable that given this species range that there are in fact several subs but taxonomists are still working on this.
