Yellow-billed Cuckoo

Coccyzus americanus

Description:

A common, but slow-moving and secretive denizen of woodlands, the Yellow-billed Cuckoo eats large quantities of hairy caterpillars. Its loud call is heard far more frequently than the bird is actually seen.

Notes:

Though not my first for this year (heard only bird on the 4th). This was my first photographed and viewed Cuckoo for 2013! Let's welcome back the Cuckoos :-)

Thanks Tom, more to come this weekend. Planning 3 days out in the field for the first peak weekend of migration. Should be a slough of warlbers passing through over the next 72 hours. Then its off to Ecuador in 34 days!

Thanks Nuwan, Yuko and Debbie! This was right at sunrise, so the lighting was extremely soft and nearly direct. Really helped the rufous in the wings and the yellow on the bill. here's to migration!
