Cydippa balyi or Rupilia insignis
Red and black beetle with unusual truncated elytra.
Savannah grassland, Kimberley
Thanks Michael for the ID. Well researched. Interesting beetle with its truncated elytra. I've seen a few times usually without my camera or unable to get a good photograph. I don't usually catch them but if I see another I will to try to get a better picture.
It could be either one of the two closely related species "Rupilia" insignis or Cydippa balyi. A specimen of Rupilia insignis is shown here: http://bie.ala.org.au/species/urn:lsid:b...
There's a strong possibility that these two names turn out to be synonyms. Both are rarely collected and only known from a couple of localities in WA and NT.
