Pyrophorus sp
the glowing eyespots on the back of this click beetle look like staring alien eyes, see photo #2
rainforest, 1400m
I spotted this on a nighthike in Yotoco natural reserve. At first spotting I thought it was eyes of something but then thought it strange that they kept glowing after I took my light off them. They can control the lights and after spending a bit of time taking its photo, it dimmed the intensity so much, that they were hardly noticeable.

How cool!
I thought it was a cat! :)
Awesome!
Thanks for all the comments! harsuame I'm shooting this manually, no function for effect. I had the camera on a tripod focused on the insect, which was staying still, then I did a one second exposure to capture the glowing eyes.
bella!! which use camera function for Eye Effect
That one is cool! Quite an interesting one.
I came here because of the evil eyes ;-)
Headlight Beetle, cool!
Wow fantastic !
GREAT!!!!
awesome.
cool, maybe they use them to attract pray... Because if they don´t want to camouflage at night it must be for a different purpose...sort of what fish do deep in the ocean...
Greetings =)
