Large yellow-brown praying mantis to 16 cms. Cruising the fruit trees and chilli bush. When disturbed it began swaying and also waved its forearms around if I got too close for comfort.

I think I found the ID for your Mantid, and it's a female! Makes sense though, since female Mantids are larger than the males.
Yes it was a bit disconcerting moving in close to take a pic. If it lashed out at me I would probably drop the camera. Those spiky forearms are scary :-)
