Weasel Skink

Saproscincus mustelinus

Description:

Small thin skink approximately 13 cm in length (5.12 inches). Has brownish coloured eyes. The Weasel Skink is a small (up to 15 cm nose to tail) ground-dwelling skink that lives in a coastal strip from Brisbane to Melbourne, and in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. The female lays up to four eggs in a nest that is often shared with other females.

Habitat:

I have spotted this particular species a number of times in my yard, but a lot less than the common garden skink that I featured in an earlier sighting. This particular one was actually in my garage on top of a piece of cardboard.

Notes:

Seems to be less frightened of humans than the common garden skink which will run off if you approach it. This particular one climb onto my hand by itself and seem quite happy to stay there.

I first thought it was an unwell garden skink Neil because they are thinner, but after seeing one several times I thought it must be a different species. :-)

I'm from Sydney and I've never seen one of these guys. You're right about the garden skinks too. Great spotting and info :)
