Coprinellus micaceus

Description:

Caps approximately 1 inch diameter; high convex and ribbed when young. Cream when young, darkening with age. Small scales present on cap, particularly at apex as they age. Stem, white and hollow; no annulus. Gills gray when young with pleurocystidia that help keep gills separated; gills become black and inky within a few hours. Spore print, black. 7-11 x 4-7 µ; subelliptical to mitriform; smooth; with a central pore.

Habitat:

Mushrooms growing in a clump on rotting hardwood stump.
