Euphydryas chalcedona
These butterflies will vary on the colored spots. This one was dark colored wings with white spots. Some of the spots on the upper wing were reddish orange on the border and few on the wing. There is red border across both tops of the wings. The head, antennae and legs are the same reddish color.
The description I read on line differs from where I spotted these. Spotted in small canyon green along side a creek.
What a lovely butterfly! Please, confirm the ID! This is definitely genus Euphydryas, but the subspecies E. chalcedona chalcedona is very tentative. I would like a second opinion on this one.
