Hmm - seems you're right! I have always heard that any puffball which is a clean white inside is edible, so I wonder if Scleroderma species don't develop their toxins until maturity...

I think they start out white (at least some of them) and then go black. There are a few photos on google that show white interior and there's one on the mushroomexpert page: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/scleroderm...

If I understand correctly, Scleroderma species don't have clean white insides which would appear to rule out the genus on this spotting. I don't have a better suggestion however.
