Heliconius charithonia
Beautiful butterfly of about 8cm wingspan. Base colour is black, with yellow markings on the body and thick yellow bands across the wings; a tiny red spot can be found at the base of the forewings, where these meet the hindwings. The colouration is aposematic, warning of the butterfly's toxicity. The adults feed on nectar, as well as pollen, and they're able to synthesise the latter into a toxin.
Found feeding on Lantana in San Pedro La Laguna, on the shore of Lake Atitlán.
