Red Cracking Bolete

Boletus chrysenteron

Description:

This interesting bolete seems to start off looking like dark balls of velvet with a yellow stipe which has a red-stained base ( pics #5 &6). They develop into this irregular shaped fruiting bodies with a greyish-green cracked outer "skin". The splits expose pink stained pore tubes. The under surface shows angular pores and is a pale yellow. A sturdy stipe is the same colour as the pore surface.

Habitat:

Growing in large numbers under pines. Have had minimal rainfall.

Notes:

This bolete looked like an over-ripe splitting canteloupe ! I am not able to ID this bolete. The closest match I could find were B.chrysenteron and B.cisalpinus. My thanks to argybee for confirming ID.
