Longhorn / Sugar Cane Beetle

Dorysthenes buqueti

Description:

Reddish tan colour. Abdomen 4cm long. Thorax 1cm. Head 1cm. Pincers.50cm. Antennae 6cm. A BIG beetle

Habitat:

Host plants - Bamboo, cassava & sugarcane. the landlady is growing cassava in the garden so perhaps that is the attraction.

Notes:

Image 1 - First spotted this beetle last evening bashing against the insect screen so went and took some photos. Images 2,3 & 4 - This morning I found it floating upside down in water. Removed it and took some photos. Image 5 - Popped the beetle in the top of a potted flower pot to show my husband and it miraculously came back to life and disappeared into the weeds on top of the pot to hide from predators.
