Long-Horn Beetle

Trachyderes (Dendrobias) mandibularis

Description:

This Cerambycid or Long-horned Wood Boring Beetle was found on Scorpion Island in Lake Chapala, near Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. We hiked to the "tail" of the island which is not inhabited and comprised of dry spiny forest habitat. These beetles were flying about everywhere. They fly very slowly, hanging at an angle and clumsily with a lot of noise. The male is close to 4 cm in length, with long hooked mandibles and very long antennae. Females are smaller with smaller mandibles and shorter antennae.

Habitat:

Dry Tropical Forest.
