Fun fact! The axolotl salamander spends its whole life in larval form and can regenerate entire limbs! Unlike most other salamanders, it lives permanently in water and retains its larval features throughout its life, a condition called neoteny.

The axolotl is endemic to just two lakes in central Mexico, and is near extinction in the wild, due to water pollution and the introduction of non-native fish such as African tilapia and Asian carp that eat its young and outcompete it for food.
