Scarlet Flowered Bloodroot

Haemodorum coccineum


Herb to 1 m tall, the basal strap-like leaves die back in winter. Flowers in cymose panicles carried well above the leaves, perianth red, fruit a capsule. A red sap is present in the rhizome which can be used as a dyestuff.
