Gray Wolf

Canis lupus

Description:

Spotted two female wolves on an elk kill while in Yellowstone. The Gray one is apparently pregnant. One was gray and the other a brown-black.

Habitat:

Open field, close to a montane forest edge.

Notes:

The two were in separate packs before this pairing. They are sisters but do not generally get along. The dark wolf is usually alpha but the gray wolf made the elk kill seen in the pictures, so she assumed command over the carcass. The two wolves are seen lashing out at ravens often to defend their kill. It was one of the most interesting experiences of my life to watch this unfold!
