Texas Brown Tarantula

Aphonopelma sp.

Description:

Brown hairy spider with reddish hairs on abdomen. Tibial hooks on the forelegs and narrow abdomen indicate a male.

Habitat:

This spider was found on a stony driveway/road surrounded by grassland with scattered small trees near a pond or lake. Map location approximate only.

Notes:

Very placid, it did not show aggression when approached, watched, and photographed at about arm's length. A second tarantula was spotted close by on another driveway/road shortly afterwards.

Looks a lot like my A. hentzi, although a lot of the US tarantulas can be described as "brown". Probably a male if it was out and about.

I wonder if that's an injury on the right front leg?

From what I've seen and read, these tarantulas are considered docile and are favorites in the pet trade.
