Eastern Grey Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Description:

a melanistic variety of the Eastern Grey Squirrel

Habitat:

Our front and back yard which butts up to a freshwater lake on one side and a swamp or marsh area in the far back and is surrounded by farm fields, woods and native prairie grass fields

Notes:

We have possibly an equal number of these all-black squirrels as Eastern Gray Squirrels. Second in numbers would be the Red Squirrels followed by the far fewer in number Fox Squirrels up here. I've seen all our squirrels eat peanuts, black-oil sunflower seeds, orange halves and in this case even watermelon.
