Dinosaur Food

Gunnera manicata

Description:

I think these have one of the LARGEST leaves I have ever seen. The first photo has my hand to serve as scale! The cone is pretty spectacular too. The common name should have made it clear that it applies only to herbivore dinos...gardening websites make it clear that giant rhubarbs are not edible. Is this why dinos went extinct?

Habitat:

Golden Acre Park that is in the heart of Leeds city...it is an area where nature has been allowed to run wild...some ornamental plants are on display as well.

Notes:

Gunnera manicata was named after a Norwegian botanist, (Bishop) Johann Ernst Gunnerus. It has got Award of Garden Merit certificate from the Royal Horticultural Society. http://www.kernock.co.uk/acatalog/Gunner...
