Synanthedon polygoni
Beautiful red and blue moth with the hind wings having clear windows. This species can be found in orange as well from March to September.
On Buckwheat flowers in chaparral about 2000 ft in elevation. Range is "Chihuahua and northern Baja California (Mexico) to Alaska, Nevada to Colorado and North Dakota east to southern Quebec."
First for Project Noah! The species name was given due to the plant it was first discovered on, Polygonum (knotweed, waterweed). Ironically, the common name is of a different plant (Buckwheat) that this is also found on.
