Falco peregrinus macropus
Hawk hovering over Sydney suburb, close to a wooded park with harbour. Soaring high in spirals, reddish brown but difficult to discern full colouring due to bright sunlight.
Suburban Sydney, near parkland and water
Despite the dark silhouette, there are some other great indicators: wing shape, tail length and shape and the striping and hood all point toward Falco peregrinus macropus! You are very lucky to have this bird as a regular visitor!
I considered peregrine falcon as the head colouring is similar, but it's so hard to say when a bird is silhouetted against the sky! He does fly over my house occasionally so I may need to wait and see if I can get a better shot next time. Thanks for your suggestion!
Great Spotting! This looks like a peregrine falcon to me! There is an Australian specie/sub specie.
