Probably is gravel - it actually does look just like the stuff next to the wood! Besides, the leftover caterpillar stuff is usually inside the end of the cocoon.

Thanks for the input, Lauren. Could be just pieces of gravel stuck on the outside?
Might be a long-haired caterpillar cocoon with the remains of the larval skin and head capsule on the outside?
