Dawn Redwood

Metasequoia glyptostroboides

Description:

Notes:

This was found growing at our zoo, so I can't vouch for it being native to our area, but I took pictures of the tree's bark pattern, cones, and needles to help identify it. I also took a picture of the needle groupings, but it turned out blurry.

Thank you Scott. I knew with such a distinctive cone, someone would pinpoint it!

The cone gives it away. It's a Dawn Redwood, one of the more unusual trees you'll ever see.

Thanks. The needle looks similar to a yew, but the cone doesn't match any yew cone I've seen.

Looks like a species of Yew - Taxus.
