dyer's polypore

Phaeolus schweinitzii

Description:

Cauliflower-like fungus with felty golden brown upper surface and a white fertile under-surface with small irregular-shaped pores. Part of one of the fungal masses looked woody and hard (pic#3)

Habitat:

Growing beneath a radiata pine. Seen as an exotic species in Australia.

Notes:

This fungus is boiled to extract dyes - green, yellow and orange. Hence, the common name "dyer's polypore". Thanks to argybee for the ID
