Bare-throated tiger heron

tigrisoma mexicanum

Description:

Gives a deep-throated, roaring call, living up to its "tiger" name. Almost three feet (80 cm) high. Long thick neck, yellow throat, holds head horizontally, striped back of neck, short legs.

Habitat:

Found in mangrove swamps, lowlands, wading rivers, and wet pastures. I saw this one in a pool along a stream near a mangrove swamp at Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge near Dominical, Costa Rica.
