Large bird (about crow size) with long neck, dull yellow bill, red eye, and black cap as shown.
Swimming just off shore from a handicapped fishing "dock" at the south end of Prospect Lake, a large artificial reservoir in Memorial Park near downtown Colorado Springs. The lake is surrounded by lawns, residential neighborhoods, and some commercial buildings.
Most of the time, these birds were in the middle of the lake.
