A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Virginia striatula
Small - roughly 5-6 inches in length. Tannish/brown in color. Appeared to have two faint vertical stripes.
A fossorial snake that was found underneath a log near other small pieces of brush/leaf litter in my backyard.
Thanks for the information. The reason I asked is because the flat-headed snake (Tantilla gracilis) is really similar in look, but the big difference between it and the rough earthsnake is the belly. The flat-headed snake has a pink belly, while the earthsnake has a cream/tan one. We have them in the same areas where I live in Oklahoma, and I see they're both widespread in Texas as well. :-)

Aaron, I'm not sure if you can see it in the third picture, where I'm holding the snake, but there's a tiny sliver of the color of the underside. It was a light tan or light grey color, but it wasn't too dramatic of a color change.
