Oryctes rhinoceros
Scarabaeidae; Dynastinae; Oryctes rhinoceros (Linnaeus, 1758). "The Asiatic rhinoceros beetle, coconut rhinoceros beetle or coconut palm rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) is a species of rhinoceros beetle of the family Scarabaeidae...This large species has an average length of about 33 to 40 mm. Adults are dark brown to black in color with shiny dorsum. Head with a prominent horn. Male has longer horn than the female. Male is characterized by a rounded, shiny terminal abdominal segment whereas female has a relatively hairier 'tail'. There are two tubercles on the thoracic ridge." Wikipedia. From this description, the above specimen is a male.
I am quite certain that the habitat of this male Oryctes rhinoceros is our backyard where there are a few Coconut Palms. This beetle was spotted flying over our back wall and landing on the concrete floor of our carport. I placed it on a sheet of paper and took a photograph. Then I released it in the back yard.
This is the only male that I have spotted, but I have taken many pictures of female specimens and I will make one of them the subject of another spotting.
