Gonipterus scutellatus
Orange weevil with red eyes
Acacia bush underneath Eucalyptus trees at a school. These trees and bushes have been established for over 5 years.
Spotted by one of my teen nature enthusiasts :)
:) I just saw that. I'll wait for the formality of the move to subspecies before updating the ID but I have to say that I'm a bit surprised.
I saw, and compliments from v belov, as well. I am very impressed. Looks like you may have an ID on your Lady Bug too.
I guess I forgot to hit "Post comment". I saw your post at BugGuide. I subscribed to it and that frowny face lady bug. I'm curious as to what it turns out to be. Hippodamia, I'd guess, but which one? Casey's would be my best guess, but it's not quite right.
Not sure what happened to the comment. I did submit it to BugGuide before your suggestion so when I hear back, I'll update if needed. It looks like a great fit to me but I'm no expert :)
Hmm...looks like my comment didn't post. BugGuide has one instance of G. scutellatus in the US. I can't say 100% that that is what this is, but it looks like the best fit. Hopefully you will get a confirmation at BugGuide.
