Belted Kingfisher

Megaceryle alcyon

Description:

A male Belted Kingfisher

Habitat:

On tree branches and partially submerged logs in a creek that feeds from the river into a still-frozen lake beyond

Notes:

We've been watching these amazing birds catch fish in the open water for a week or two now. Their ability to see easily 8-10 feet from a tree branch down into the moving water, dive down, locate their fish and come back up almost a full minute later holds me spell bound. I love everything about these phenomenal, little birds from their unique call, to their astonishing eye sight to their fishing skills and beyond. The time they spend under water affords me the luxury of catching them resurfacing once I hear the splash so I've been trying to get a few good images together to share...Images to follow once I finish editing and uploading them.
