Utricularia purpurea
swamps, lakes, and ponds
This stunning little aquatic weed was blooming along the trail in Big Cypress National Preserve today. It took me a while to find ID, as I didn't realize it was an aquatic. It was blooming in mud among grasses. There wasn't much water today (about ankle deep) in some pools in middle of trail. In the last pic you if you follow stem down from flower you can see the drying plant which looks like branching veins, or the inner structure of the lungs. There's a nice little video in ref. site.

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
Thank you so much! This is such a beautiful plant, I hope to see one in the wild too.
My pleasure. Added.
Please consider adding this and any other applicable spottings to my mission: Carnivorous Plants of Florida http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/1697...
