Aphis spiraecola
There is a "symbiosis" when there is an interaction between two organisms and at least one benefits from it. If both organisms benefit from the relationship is said to be mutualism. A curious example of mutualism are ants and aphids. The aphids as they are also known, make small holes in the leaves of plants to suck sap. The hungry ants that roam nearby, rather than eat the aphids, approach them and "milk". To do this, rub the ant to aphid with its antennae and this responds by secreting a substance called honeydew. As if it were a small herd, the ants move the aphids from the dried leaves to fresh leaves. If it rains, ants run to shelter from the rain aphids, putting them under the leaves. And if a ladybird tries to eat some aphids, is beaten by the ants. As seen, the ant gets the benefit of the aphid eating their honeydew and in return, the aphid gets protection. Mutualism in its finest.
